Kuntanawa Hapé and Sananga Ceremony

A traditional hapé ceremony with Prince Haru Kuntanawa, leader of the Kuntanawa people, and Dr. Hayra Kuntanawa, co-leader of the Kuntanawa people, from their territory in the rainforest of Acre, in the western Amazon.

Where the evening on the 22nd is teaching and dialogue, this is the medicine itself. Hapé, known in our tradition as rumen, is a sacred preparation the Kuntanawa have carried for generations. It is received through a tepi or kuripe, offered person to person in a held circle. Sananga, the eye medicine of the forest, is part of the ceremony as well.

Haru and Hayra will guide the circle, share the teachings that accompany these medicines, and sing.

This gathering carries an educational aspect alongside the ceremony — how these medicines are understood within Kuntanawa cosmology, how they are used with respect, and what it means to be in right relationship with a tradition that is not your own.

No prior experience is needed. Come with an open heart and an intention.

Every gathering supports the Kuntanawa people's work protecting the forest and the demarcation of their lands. Traditional goods and medicines from the territory will be available.
